Music on the mind
4-7 October 2018
This year’s Little Venice Music Festival examines the theme of Music on the Mind. From the genius of Mozart to dramatic depictions of madness, music created by extraordinary young minds as well as a thought-provoking musical survey of the subject of mental health, we explore the powerful connections between human thought and musical experiences.
As usual, we look forward to welcoming a star-studded cast of artists including baritone Benedict Nelson and mezzo-soprano Clare McCaldin. Our artist-in-residence is the superb guitarist Laura Snowden, who will be featured in a candlelit solo recital and also in Malcolm Arnold’s sublime concerto with the Berkeley Ensemble. With brand new music and classics by Schumann, Barber and Ravel, this year’s festival is a feast for the ears, as well as the mind.
Our festival finale, culminating in Mozart’s sublime Clarinet Quintet, draws together a treasure trove of works born through memory, reflection, and historical dialogue.
Confinement and its effects on the mind are explored in the world premiere of a new arrangement of Stephen McNeff’s Vivienne, followed by Messiaen’s seminal Quartet for the End of Time.
An intimate candlelit recital by festival artist Laura Snowden, including works by Dowland, Villa Lobos, and Laura herself.
Baritone Benedict Nelson returns to explore how mental and emotional distress have affected the work of composers from Robert Schumann to Malcolm Arnold. Prepare for an evening by turns surprising and enlightening.
Join us for the premiere of a new work by Tim Watts, alongside Malcolm Arnold’s jazz-influenced Guitar Concerto. Works written in or about childhood by Britten and Berkeley complete the all-British programme.
